Groundheat is a pioneer in the geothermal energy industry. In 1985, the company started off servicing small homes, and quickly expanded to mansions of up to 62,000 square feet. Now, they take on large projects including district energy across North America, Europe and Asia.

Groundheat has been a leader in renewable systems innovation, completing hundreds of small and large scale projects, developing superior proprietary technologies and methodologies, and providing unparalleled expertise to its strategic partners and clients internationally.

In fact, Groundheat created the largest district energy source of its kind in Canada in 2018, a 604-apartment hub in Waterloo. Groundheat also completed Mezzaroma, the biggest residential geothermal district energy project in the world in Rome, Italy for more than 1,000 units in 22 high-rise apartment buildings. This was a design-build project managed entirely by Groundheat with a 10,000 square foot mechanical room.

Meet Our Founder

The Groundheat team is proud to be founded by Gino Di Rezze, who has not only led Groundheat to great success, but contributed greatly to the geothermal industry as a whole.

Gino started off with a company called Villaneuve Heating in 1979, completing geothermal as well as HVAC work. In 1985, he started Groundheat and completed geothermal projects for homes and businesses all over Canada and the world.

Gino is a Certified Geoexchange Designer, and has many credibilities including his membership of the Association of Energy Engineers-Certified Designers and his Scotiabank Environmental Leadership Award.

Gino inspires his employees everyday with his contributions to geothermal energy. He has a number of published research papers on Bloomberg conducted by himself and the federal government. He received drilling bursaries for research at the University of Ottawa as well as a college in Lindsay. He also published papers with University of Rome and held presentations at Oklahoma State.

ICCO Groundheat Italy Canada Award

The Italian Chamber of Commerce of Ontario (ICCO) Business Excellence Awards (BEA) are held annually to acknowledge the most outstanding and innovative business leaders in the Italian-Canadian community, particularly those have been prominent in Ontario’s business setting. In 2010, Groundheat President Gino Di Rezze was the BEA winner of the Scotiabank ICCO Environmental Leadership Award.
